Ilona Hiršl
Considering their fate, the largest group of Leopold and Regina Hiršl’s children are those who perished in Auschwitz. Two daughters, Ilona and Micka, married to Međimurje region in Croatia even before the war, where they suffered similar fate as their sisters at home.
Ilona or Ilonka (photographed with her husband Jože), married Sonnenfeld, was the third Hiršl child. She lived in Čakovec until she and her husband were deported to Auschwitz in spring 1944, where they both perished. Her niece, Erika Fürst recalls how they thought insecure wartime situation is no time to have children. She had a feeling “something was in the air” ...
