Remembering the Deportation of the Jews in Prekmurje, Slovenia

About Project

The two-year project aimed to reconstruct the final stages of the so-called Slovenian Holocaust, the 1944 deportation of the Prekmurje Jewish community to Auschwitz, which inadvertently resulted in almost complete destruction of Jewish population and also their cultural heritage in the region. Doing this we also wanted to devise strategies and provide the material to assist teachers in preparing their history classes.

The approach of collecting and researching the testimonies of local people enabled us to reveal the importance of roles of local communities in experiencing and remembering the Holocaust. Moreover, in the long run, the local experience is hoped to endow teaching of the topic with a necessary degree of empathy and emotion.

These resources will hopefully aid bringing the topic closer to pupils and students, and thus to increase awareness and persistent relevance of the study of Holocaust also in Slovenia.
