Remembering the Deportation of the Jews in Prekmurje, Slovenia

Irena Hiršl

Irena Hiršl, married Ebenšpanger, was like many other Prekmurje Jews deported to Auschwitz in the spring of 1944, from where she was later on transferred to another camp. She died on the way, undernourished and hypothermic, in a forest on two fellow internees who only notified Irena’s family after the war …

Irena’s fate demonstrates the Death March was hardly the only such event.

Irena’s husband, Ladislav (Laci) Ebenšpanger met similar fate as most of other Jewish conscripts in Hungarian army. He died while on force labour in Hungary.
