Remembering the Deportation of the Jews in Prekmurje, Slovenia

Terezija Hiršl

Terezija Hiršl, poročena Fuerst, was Leopold's and Regina's oldest daughter. At home they called her Medi and she worked as a cashier in Murska Sobota until she married Edvard Fürst.

She was deported to Auschwitz in April 1944, tohether with her daughters. According to Erika, she was fluent in German, which perhaps saved her from the gas chamber. During the selection process, she managed to persuade the notorious dr. Jozef Mengele to direct them to the labour camp. While in camp, Terezija and her daughters worked at road-build sites. For the most part of the summer, autumn and early winter she lived through constant selections, carrying bricks and endless counts. She was separated from Erika during one of the counts, and for some time she was convinced her daughter was killed in the gas chamber. Weak and sickly Terezija and her other daughter were kept alive by Erika, who managed to find some food and clothes in the camp after the Nazis left. After the liberation they returned through Krakow and Budapest to Murska Sobota, where she got a loan to rebuild the house. Her husband never returned. On the journey home she considered migrating to the US, but the daughters talked her into going home and wait for their father...

Terezija and her daughters are part of the 65 survivors and a small group of those who decided to stay in Prekmurje despite the painful memories and nationalisation.
